5 EXPERT tips on how to make your next promotional video

  1. Get LOTS of footage!!

A lot of times I see people being very selective when it comes to the filming. They think, “I won’t use that shot”, maybe they have an idea in their mind of what they want, but when they come to video editing later they are left disappointed.

The editing should be done with your computer not with your camera!! So don’t be too selective when you are filming and make sure you have plenty of memory and batteries in your camera so you don’t have running out of space anxiety.

  2. The interview is like your meat and vege, the B-Roll is your gravy.

The interview helps to tell the story of your video, it is a staple ingredient of all documentary video and without it video has no substance and is merely pretty imagery set to music. So make sure that you prioritise your interview.

B-Roll is the additional footage used to show what is said during the interview, it is the gravy that completes the meal. B-roll makes your video look much more professional as you are able to hide any jump-cuts and show rather than tell, which increases visual stimulation.

  3. Listen during the interview for B-Roll opportunities. As you are conducting your interview, take note of any particular details that would benefit additional B-Roll. For example, your interview says that following “My favourite part of my job is the amazing team I work with.” Take a note and make sure to ask if you could film some shots of your interviewee and his team-mates. This is the perfect time to strengthen what he is saying by the use of supporting visuals. A great use of B-Roll.

  4. Just have fun.

It can be a daunting experience pulling out a camera and filming people at your office. Try to relax, take some breathes and make fun of yourself a little bit. This will help to create a relaxed environment and create a video that is much more authentic and watchable.

  5. Talk to a co-worker not the camera!

Rather that asking your talent to talk to the camera. Get them to look off camera at a co-worker when they respond to the interview questions, this will make them feel much more at ease.
